Some of the world’s most fascinating natural treasures are formed far beneath the surface of the Earth, over immense periods of geological time. Gemstones are among them. They are rare, they are finite, and they are found only in certain parts of the world.

For us, growing up in Sri Lanka — a country internationally renowned for its unbroken gemstone heritage spanning thousands of years — created a simple realization:

That idea became the cornerstone of MIHILAK GEMS.

Our involvement in the gemstone trade began in 2017. Before focusing on selling, we focused on learning.

Natural gemstones cannot be properly understood from photographs, certificates, or textbooks alone. Experience grows from handling stones, observing optical nuances, making buying decisions, studying quality in diverse lighting, understanding the market, and learning from every single transaction.

Over the years, practical hands-on experience has shaped how we rigorously evaluate every gemstone offered by MIHILAK GEMS:

Sri Lanka’s gemstone trade is built around relationships that often extend from mining areas to cutters, traders, gemological laboratories, and international buyers. Our sourcing remains closely connected to that local network.

We acquire gemstones through our own mining connections as well as trusted sources and mining contacts we know personally within Sri Lanka. Being close to the source gives us something we consider extremely valuable: context. It allows us to understand the complete journey of a gemstone before it reaches an international collector.

Trust is the single most important element in an international gemstone transaction. A buyer may be thousands of kilometres away from the stone. They experience it initially through photographs, videos, measurements, descriptions, and laboratory reports rather than holding it in their hand. That creates a profound responsibility for the seller.

MIHILAK GEMS is created for buyers who value quality, rarity, provenance, and absolute transparency. Each customer may have a different reason for purchasing a gemstone. Our responsibility is not to pressure them into buying — it is to help them understand the stone.
